The first book will be Cloak of Deception by James Luceno. It centers around Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, taking place directly before Phantom Menace. The book is sort of a slow read, but if you can manage to get into it then you'll be fine. A guy named Havac is deadset on killing Chancellor Valorum, but despite this, Valorum still wants the great Trade Summit held on Eriadu, a planet with many suspicious folk that may be related to the assassin. Wilhuff Tarkin makes a cameo as governor of Eriadu, but isn't used as more than a tie-in to the original trilogy. We see the Jedi Council in action on a mission to find Havac, as well. It makes for a nice background read for the prequel trilogy, but that's about it. B+
